Cayenne earns invite to Olympic trials
SPENBOROUGH AC sprinter, 19-year-old Joshua Cayenne, has been invited to attend the Beijing Olympic Trials at Birmingham in July after a stunning performance at the Yorkshire Championships last weekend.
Joshua won the senior men's 400m in a personal best time of 48.30 seconds and the watching officials were so impressed that they invited him to the Olympic trials.
Nine local athletes returned from the Yorkshire Championships, held at Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield, with gold medals, while a host of other competitors also impressed to win silver and bronze.
Spenborough members returned with six Yorkshire titles, while there were 17 other athletes who reached finals.
Star of the weekend, of the Spen athletes, was Ciara Flannery, running in the Under-15 Girls 100m on Saturday, as she won the race in a personal best time of 12.39.
Ciara, a training partner of Joshua, returned on Sunday to take the 200m title, smashing the championship record in a time of 25.37.
Liam Stedman followed his cross country success by taking the Under-13 boys 800m title in 2.25, Sarah Anthoney, another Under-15 girl, took the discus title with a PB throw of 22.74, despite not being able to train leading up to the championships due to the throwing cage at Spenborough being out of action. Sarah also competed in the 100m and shot putt.
Spen's sixth county champion came in the junior girls triple jump where Dijan Matheson won gold with a jump of 10.48.
Local middle distance runners, coached by David Fryer, also won a number of medals.
Sally Smith celebrated her 14th birthday in style, winning gold in the 1500m and silver in the 800m.
Sally is much smaller than many of the athletes she competes against but showed real heart to sprint a away in the final 200 metres of her 1500m to win the gold.
Thomas Atkinson also won gold and silver in the 800m and 400m Under-17 Mens event. Competing in the 800m, Thomas led from start to finish, showing blistering pace at the start of the race, which blew away the rest of the field, who were left to race for the minor places. Thomas won by over six seconds. In the 400m, Thomas smashed the Wakefield Harriers club record by nearly a second but this was only good enough for second place in the best race of the day.
After fine displays in Malta and now at the Yorkshire Championships, Thomas is in excellent form to compete well on the national stage.
Atkinson's weekend was topped off when he was awarded the Sports Performer of the Year at Whitcliffe Mount School's annual sports dinner - the second consecutive year he has won the prize.
Jack Hallas won a gold medal in the best race of the weekend in the Under-20s Mens 800m.
Jack was almost barged off the track at one stage and this competitive race came down to four fast finishing athletes.
Jack was trailing in fourth place but finishing the fastest, he seized his chance when a gap appeared, sprinting past two of the four athletes.
It just left a Sheffield athlete who last year beat Jack to the gold but this time Hallas had the strength of legs and character to dip through the finishing line and clinch the gold medal.
Sally, Thomas and Jack now move on to the Northern Counties Championships next week, where they will compete against the best athletes from the North of England.
Other Spen AC members competing saw Emma Wilkinson won silver in the Under-13 girls shot and bronze in the 800m, with a PB of 2.31, Natalie Ingham took bronze in the Under-13 girls long jump and also competed in the 80m.
Jennifer Ibbitson returned from the championships with two bronze medals in the Senior Women's category.
Jennifer threw 28.42 metres to finish third in the discus, while she jumped 2.80m to win bronze in the pole vault.
Jennifer's achievement in the pole vault was even more impressive as she spent time between her jumps coaching a junior athlete.
In the Under-13 boys, Paul Davies made the 800m final, while Joe Walker finished sixth in his heat.
