Soothill 0
George Healey 2
By Richard Pickering
GEORGE Healey upset the formbook at Liversedge FC on Monday evening and beat champions Soothill to lift the Spen Valley League's Sonder Heating Cup.
Goals in the final 15 minutes from Andy Simpson and Richard Tomlinson were just reward for the Division One title challengers after an improved second-half display.
Soothill, fresh from retaining the Premier Division crown, were keen to make it a league and cup double but after spurning good chances in a scrappy opening half they were made to pay.
Yusuf Dadiwala, Imran Lunat and Abdullah Aswat were lively up front and, with man-of-the-match Faizal Bham pulling the strings in midfield, Soothill took charge after a cagey first 15 minutes.
A quick throw in on the right by Ahmed Seedat found Abdullah Aswat whose neat turn ended with a shot flashing across the face of goal.
Aswat also saw a drive graze the right corner of the goal while a Seedat volley dipped just over and Imran Lunat had a drive well held by goalkeeper Andy Howard Senior.
George, with Tomlinson and the impressive James Scott grafting hard up front, started to gain a foothold but Soothill continued to create chances.
Abdullah Aswat headed a Bham corner wide from close range while Aswat then volleyed home after neat work by Bham and Imran Lunat, only for it to be ruled out for offside.
Andy Simpson and James Simpson started to exert some authority in midfield but the closest George went was a Phil Temple free-kick from half way which Soothill's defence allowed to bounce and then anxiously watch it drift just wide of the right post.
After a punishing schedule, challenging for the Division One title and reaching three cup finals, you wondered whether George would run out of steam but it was they who seized the initiative after the break.
The determination of Joe Hallas saw Andy Simpson set up James Simpson and his 30-yard strike brought a good save out of Soothill goalkeeper Gavin Maldzoor.
A deep Dave Barlow cross from the left saw Scott head just wide while soon after he headed the ball past a defender and ran in on goal before firing into the side-netting.
Abdullah Aswat responded with a shot just wide while a weak Seedat effort almost embarrassed Howard Senior but after it trickled from his grasp he regathered just before it crossed the goalline.
Scott headed over a Marcus Render cross while Bham saw a 25-yard shot held by the goalkeeper before delivering a teasing cross which Abdullah Aswat headed over from six yards.
In the 71st minute Render hooked in a cross from the right and the goalkeeper failed to gather in a challenge with Tomlinson before the ball broke to Barlow but he lashed his shot wide.
George's belief grew the longer the game went on and 15 minutes from time they broke the deadlock. Render swung over a free-kick from the right and Andy Simpson rose unmarked at the far post to power a header low past the goalkeeper.
Scott continued to harry the Soothill defence with his willingness to chase every George cause while the defence of Colin Jenkins, Temple, Hallas and the evergreen Billy Simpson marshalled Soothill's threat well.
Two minutes from time George sealed victory after Scott's determination won possession 30 yards out. Render swung in a cross from the right and Tomlinson saw his close-range header parried by the goalkeeper before bundling the ball home.
