CLECKHEATON RU Club have swooped to sign four former players as the build up to the new season swings into action.
Cleckheaton held a meeting for the committee, players and possible new recruits on Tuesday evening, after which, four players agreed to return to Moorend.

Scrum-half Dom Castle, who captained the side two years ago, returns and is joined by hooker
Steve Worsley, along with Paul Turner and Ryan Piercy, who have both had spells at Halifax and Heath.

Cleckheaton fixtures secretary Alan Bentley said: “Our new coach, Dave Harrison, addressed the meeting and spoke from the heart, saying ‘This is the type of club you (the players) should want to finish your careers at, with your mates and playing for a good club.’

“That is the type of attitude we want to install, that players are playing for the club, the shirt and their mates and not the money,” Mr Bentley added.

Cleckheaton have revealed that all players will receive the same expenses, with small bonuses for wins and that each will pay subscriptions to the sports club as well as paying match fees, although some of that money will be put into a kitty to fund such things as Christmas parties and other team get-togethers.

The club were delighted with the response and to sign four players, a week before pre-season training begins was a real bonus.

Harrison will take his first training session since re-joining the Moorenders, at Whitcliffe Mount on Monday from 7pm.

The squad will then train each Monday and Thursday until September and once the season begins, training will revert to each Tuesday and Thursday.

Mr Bentley revealed that the club have a much bigger committee, including former players Tudor Evans and Steve Burnhill as they look to take the club into a new era.

Cleckheaton’s second team will be mainly made up of a development squad with a few experienced players and they will receive expert training from the likes of Burnhill, Neil Gillen and Steve Quinn, dad of former leading points scorer Chris.

The club also aim to run four senior teams each week, with Tim Hall and Colin Thompson continuing to run the thirds and fourths, who will play in the Yorkshire Second Teams Leagues.

Cleckheaton have also revealed that the club will revert to playing in their traditional red and white hoops from next season as the new-look committee aim to take the Moorenders forwards into the future.
