Cricket returns to Cemetery Road
HECKMONDWIKE and Carlinghow CC have moved to Cemetery Road following the demise of Heckmondwike CC.
Heckmondwike Sports Club were eager that cricket continued at the ground.
They approached Heckmondwike and Carlinghow and after discussions, the cricket club held an extraordinary general meeting, where it was voted unanimously to move.
Heckmondwike and Carlinghow secretary and first team captain Paul Cooper said: "We have a lot of history at the old ground (Chapel Lane), where cricket was played for 100 years. It was sad to leave but very exciting at the same time."
Upper Chapel CC played at the old ground before merging with Carlinghow in 1997 to become Heckmondwike and Carlinghow United.
Mr Cooper said a key part of the deal was they could keep the Heckmondwike and Carlinghow name.
Mr Cooper added: "It was important that we secured a long term deal and we have it in writing that we play here for the current lease of the ground."
The paperwork was only signed last Thursday, just in time for the first home game of the new season in Huddersfield Central League Section A against Woolley when they made a winning start.
The Cooper and Crowther families have long been associated with Heckmondwike and Carlinghow. Paul's dad, Brain Cooper, played and is now chairman, while his grandad, Geoff Aspinall, also played there. Andrew and Matthew Crowther are players and David Crowther is now the club treasurer.
The club is hoping the move to Cemetery Road may help attract new sponsors.
The Chapel Lane ground is owned by Heckmondwike URC and it is understood they will maintain the field to use for church fetes and galas.
