Shirebrook Town 2
Liversedge 1
LIVERSEDGE ended their campaign on a low note, but they still have plenty to be optimistic about.
With fourth place cemented, manager Steve Newton gave some of his youngsters the chance to impress which they certainly did.
Liversedge started brigh
tly and almost took the lead in the opening 10 minutes.
Danny Cooper fed Nicky Boshell in the area who laid the ball off for Luke Sherman to strike, but the big man failed to hit the target.
Goalkeeper Lee Ashforth was called into action, saving well after a flowing move from the home side.
The game died down, neither team being able to create any real scoring chances.
Sherman had a half-chance to put Liversedge one up going into the break but he failed to work the goalkeeper again.
The young Liversedge side started the second half much better and created several chances, none though, hit the net. There was a neat one-two between Craig Sheridan and Jake Lawlor but Sheridan couldn't finish it off.
Sheridan found himself with a better chance a few minutes later, when he was put in by Brook Newton, but he hit wide.
Liversedge were playing some good stuff in their best spell of the game but couldn't take advantage. They were even more disheartened when Shirebrook took the lead.
A good ball from the right split Sedge's centre-backs and Town's striker was able to put his side one ahead.
It was a big blow for Liversedge to concede when they had created so many chances but they refused to hand over the three points easily and they set about grabbing an equaliser.
Newton went on one of his trademark runs but his shot at the end of it was saved by the goalkeeper.
Liversedge rang the changes, bringing off Boshell, who had a quiet game, and Sheridan after a good shift. Before the subs could even warm up they found their team 2-0 down as Shirebrook were awarded a penalty which they scored.
The goal encouraged a late fight back from Liversedge which saw sub Kieran Corley hit the net to make it 2-1.
It was shortly followed by a strong penalty appeal for Liversedge but it was waved away by the referee.
Eventually it all became too little too late as Liversedge failed to steal a point.
Liversedge will have been disappointed to finish with a loss but it was a good run-out for some of the players of the future, who turned in a good effort for such a young team.
It has been an over-achieving season for the Clayborners, who finished comfortably in fourth with the added bonus of winning the NCE League's President's cup.
If Liversedge can make one more step up for next season they will surely be able to put in another strong title challenge.
Liversedge: Ashforth, Wood, Hewitt, Roche, Sparkes, Cooper, Sheridan (Cooke 74), Lawlor, Sherman, Boshell (Corley 61), Newton
