Liversedge chairman steps down
By Andrew Hunt
MARK Brier has stepped down as chairman of Liversedge FC and is set to become the new manager of Brighouse Town.
Brier told the Liversedge committee of his intentions to step down around three months ago, as he wanted to resume coaching, and was set to take charge of the Liversedge Reserve side next season.
He informed the supporters in his programme notes for the final home game of the Northern Counties East League of the season, saying he had enjoyed his time as chairman and was looking forward to being involved on the playing side with the Clayborn club.
It was only then that the chance to manager Brighouse came up and he thought it was too good an opportunity to turn down. He officially accepted the post on Monday.
"I informed the club when I took the post that I would be chairman on a temporary basis. I am a football coach and that is what I really want to do," said Brier.
"I respect everybody at Liversedge and I have had some fantastic times there but this decision was taken purely for football reasons.
"Brighouse is my local club, it is three-quarters of a mile from my house and they are the side I watch when Liversedge are not playing. I felt it was an opportunity and a challenge too good to turn down.
"This is the only job in football I would have considered to take me away from Liversedge. It is a big challenge as Brighouse have been invited to join the Northern Counties East League next season, starting in Division One."
Mr Brier has had some memorable times during his time at Clayborn, as commercial manager, reserve team manager, caretaker first team boss and chairman.
"I have loved it at Liversedge. I'll always have a soft spot for them and there is no way that I would want to part company with the club acrimoniously," he added.
The Liversedge commitee put on record their thanks to Mr Brier in a club statement yesterday.
It read: "Mark arrived when Eugene Lacy came to the club and immediately took over as reserve team manager when Mick Blanchard resigned.
"With his coaching knowledge and contacts in the Halifax area, Mark brought some talented youngsters to the club. His other role was as commercial manager, something which he did exceptionally well in attracting new sponsors to the club.
"The club thank Mark for his endeavours over the last five years and wish him well for the future."
