SHIREBROOK, mid-table in North East Counties Premier Division battled for a point at Clayborn in a bad-tempered game game which brought seven second half bookings.
Liversedge dominated the first 15 minutes but yet again couldn't punish their opponen
ts. Within a minute Liversedge could have been a goal up, as they won a corner and from the kick, captain Darryl Leach saw his goalbound header cleared off the line with the goalkeeper beaten.
This was to set the tone for the next 15 minutes as Shirebrook had to defend the Alamo, only getting over the halfway line twice in a period that Liversedge's midfield and defence had good possession but they lacked movement up front.
On five minutes Joe Hewitt's cross found Paul Smith but the stand-in striker headed wide.
Goalkeeper, Lee Ashforth, was called into action saving well from a Craig Cantrell strike.
Liversedge bombarded the visitors with attack after attack but ultimately were without an end product .
Eventually it was a midfielder who broke the deadlock. On 26 minutes Danny Cooper received the ball 22 yards out and hit a left foot shot low into the right hand corner with the Shirebrook goalkeeper strangely frozen to the spot and just watching the ball hit the back of the net.
The lead was to last only four minutes as Shirebrook equalised. After Liversedge lost possession in the Shirebrook half, the ball was cleared but Liversedge defender Matt Sparkes' resulting pass to a colleague was 'intercepted' by the referee.
The deflection fell kindly to a Shirebrook midfielder who instantly put Craig Cantrell through on goal and he duly netted the chance to the delight of the Shirebrook contingent.
Just before half-time Luke Sherman, on for the injured Paul Smith, turned on the edge of the area and thundered a superb left foot strike but it just missed the angle of the right hand upright.
The second half was poor entertainment as Shirebrook put the shutters up and were happy with a point.
There were some lively challenges which saw three Liversedge players and four Shirebrook players going into the referees' book.
Youngsters, Kieran Corley, who again looked lively enough to show he'll be an asset to next season's squad, and Josh Cooke were both introduced by manager, Steve Newton, the latter making his first appearance for the first team. Neither side added to their tally and at the final whistle it was obvious from the shrieks of delight that Shirebrook had achieved their objective.
