CLECKHEATON RU have begun training for the new season and hope to have Craig Rika back in their ranks as they seek to make a proper impact in North Division One after their slide last term.
Rika has spoken to joint coach John Dudley and agreed to return to Moorend and he is due to train next week. He was a popular figure at Cleckheaton but left for Morley three seasons ago and scored 13 tries in his first year as his speed proved a real threat.
But he has had problems with injuries and did not play many matches last season, however, he could be a useful addition to the Moorend squad as the club aim to re-build.
So far as the general situation is concerned, Dudley remarked: "We have had a couple of good training sessions, there were some new faces, who came to have a look at us, and a few lads from last year who are staying."
Dudley said he had spoken to a number of players and invited them down to Moorend to have a chat and is hopeful several will agree to join.
Among the players from last season, who are staying on, are the Piper brothers. Matt, who suffered a broken leg last season which ended his promising stint, has been working away but is due back next week."
Dudley himself will continue, Carl Mason, Lance Hamilton and Mark Sargeant are others who are staying on but Johnny West, another players whose season was ended early by a bad injury, has opted to join First Division Rotherham.
However, it seems doubtful he will be playing regular first team rugby and Dudley said: "I have had a word with him and told him no matter how hard he trains, if he isn't playing regularly, his rugby won't develop.
"I hope he does well but he would probably have been better off playing regularly in our first team, although you can't fault ambition."
Added interest at Moorend is the fact the club have been drawn at home to Rotherham Titans in the Yorkshire Cup first round, although this is in the distance but has been arranged for April 8 2009.
