ROLLER hockey returns to Whitcliffe Mount Sports Centre this weekend after an absence of almost 20-years.
Manchester Roller Hockey Club will play two National League Premier Division games tomorrow and Sunday as their usual home venue is being refurbished.
Darren Whitley and Daniel Messinger, from Cleckheaton, both play for the Manchester club and have
worked with Gail Gerrard, sports co-ordinator at Whitcliffe Mount, to bring the sport back to the town.
It is hoped to offer youngsters taster training sessions in the future with a view to setting up a new club in September aimed at 10-19 year olds.
The Spen Valley Flyers played roller hockey at Whitcliffe around 20-years ago but since they folded the sport has not been played in Cleckheaton.
Darren, a goalkeeper, plays for Manchester's National Division One side, while defender Daniel is expected to play for their Premier team in both games this weekend.
Tomorrow, Manchester will play Grimsby, start, 7pm and on Sunday afternoon (2pm), Premier leaders Herne Bay United from Kent are the visitors.
Herne Bay have a purpose- built court on the central parade pier and attract crowds of several hundred for the big games and it is hoped this weekend's matches at Whitcliffe will attract youngsters who want to see the sport and who could be interested in getting involved with roller hockey.
Roller hockey is played on quad skates, using a ball and a more traditional hockey stick with players wearing less padding.
In-line hockey, also known as street hockey, is similar to ice hockey and is played with a puck.
Roller Hockey matches are played over two 25-minute halves, although a game can last up to two hours due to stoppages and breaks in play.
Gail has already set up a roller skating club to get potential roller hockey players used to skating.
The sessions, which are run in conjunction with the Spen Valley Schools Sports Partnership and Whitcliffe Mount, proved so popular that they now train each Saturday between 4-5pm and Thursdays between 5-6pm.
Whitcliffe Mount school are also hoping to introduce both roller skating and roller hockey into their PE lessons.
The club has offered to loan them equipment to keep the initial costs down.
