CLECKHEATON athlete Sally Smith, 15, won a bronze medal at the Yorkshire Cross Country Championships, following on from her comfortable victory at the West Yorkshire Schools event a fortnight earlier.
As one of the younger runners in the Under-17 race, held at Thornes Park, Wakefield, Sally moved up the field during the 4.35K to finish strongly in third place in a time of 16 minutes 37 seconds.
Bronze was a good result for Sally as it earned her a place in the Yorkshire team for the Inter-Counties event to be held in Birmingham.
As a student at Whitcliffe Mount School, Sally represented Kirklees at the West Yorkshire Schools Cross Country Championships held at Silcoates School, Wakefield.
In the Intermediate Girls race, Sally emerged from the leading group to win the 3.7K race with a commanding lead of 47 seconds at the finish line.
Sally will now represent West Yorkshire at the English Schools Championships in Manchester.
Sally, of Wakefield Harriers, now trains with coach Aaron Thomas at Leeds Carnegie, along with Aaron's wife, Charlene Thomas, the UK 1,500m champion, who also runs for Wakefield.
Sally said: "I'm enjoying training at Carnegie and it is great being in the group with Aaron and Charlene."
n Spenborough AC's Amy Sharrad ran in the Senior Women's race at the Yorkshire Championships and finished 39th in a time of 23.37.
Spen had two runners competing in the Under-15 Girls race.
Emma Wilkinson finished 31st in 15.57, two places ahead of clubmate Katie Byrne, who came home in 16.07.
In the Under-13 Girls, Spen's Keavey Ward finished 17th in 10.56 with clubmate Ellie Jo Bolton-Hardy 31st in 11.11.
