LOCAL boxing star of the future, Cory O'Regan from Cleckheaton won a silver medal at the national finals of the Royal Navy ABA Golden Gloves Championships at Knottingley West Yorkshire.
Cory, who trains at Cleckheaton ABC and weighs in at 34kg, lost 4-1 on the countback system to Archie Shaw of the Eltham Club in London.
Cleckheaton's coach, Keith Tate, said Cory was overcome by his nerves in his first big fight.
It was only the second defeat of Cory's 10 match career to date, the first coming in his very first fight. However there was a silver lining for Cory as the two finalists in the competition have been invited to represent England at the 34kg weight division in the forthcoming home internationals.
Dating back to 1920, the Golden Gloves has built up a reputation as being the top competition for young boxers aged 12 to 14.
This year will be the second of a five-year partnership between the Royal Navy and Royal Marines and the ABAE (Amateur Boxing Association England).
Cleckheaton fighters have been successful at events around the country. Liam Frain, 16, showed that he is a prospect worth watching after making his debut in a hastily arranged bout at the Cedar Court Hotel Bradford. He defeated B Khan from the host club First Sports on a unanimous decision.
Jack Pyrah travelled to Hull where he added to his tally of success when he beat J Fores of the host club, Kingston ABC.
Josh Hargreaves put the recent disappointment of losing in the Golden Gloves semi-final behind him when he earned a unanimous decision win over Oliver Simpson of Kelly's Club, Leeds.
All the fighters at the Cleckheaton Boxing Club are looking forward to the club's next dinner show at the Cedar Court Hotel, Bradford on April 2. Already 200 dinner tickets have been snapped up but there are some still available, priced at £35 which includes a meal. Details and tickets are available at the Cleckheaton club, off South Parade.
