Spen Victoria offer derby test of Gomersal ambitions
By Andrew Hunt
GOMERSAL look to continue their fine start to the season as they host neighbours Spen Victoria in Bradford League Division Two tomorrow (start 1.30pm).
Gomersal have won their first three league matches to send a clear message of their intentions to be serious promotion contenders. Their only setback came in the Priestley Cup, when they lost narrowly to first division Bowling Old Lane, although that tie was played over several evenings.
Opening batsman Richard Gould has been in fine form and his 174 in last Saturday's victory over Morley took his tally to 263 in all competitions.
In contrast, Spen are taking a little time to adjust, having seen so many changes in the winter, and last Sunday their bowling was plundered for 459 by East Bierley in the Priestley Cup.
On Sunday both Spen and Gomersal face long trips in the Heavy Woollen Cup. Gomersal travel to Lancashire to face Huddersfield League side Delph and Dobcross for their second round tie while Spen are at Rotherham side Rockingham.
Hartshead Moor have been boosted for tomorrow's home game with second- placed Idle as overseas man Fawad Ali is set to make his debut.
Ali is a 21-year-old right handed batsman, who has played eight first-class games for Peshawar, scoring 312 runs in 14 innings.
Moor have suffered three defeats in the league and will be hoping Ali gets straight into the groove against a side who have won their opening three and are five points behind Gomersal.
First division sides Woodlands and East Bierley were due to play their delayed Heavy Woollen Cup first round tie at Albert Terrace last night (Thursday) with the winners at Jer Lane on Sunday.
The duo have also made excellent starts in Division One, winning their opening three games. Free-scoring Bierley racked up 683 runs in their two games last weekend, with Yorkshire academy player Greg Wood scoring centuries on both days.
Bierley and Woodlands will aim to extend their winning league runs tomorrow as Esholt visit South View Road, while champions Woodlands host Saltaire.
Cleckheaton will look to kick-start their campaign, after a win and two defeats, at Pudsey St Lawrence, still searching for their first win.
n It looks like being a long, hard season for Central Yorkshire League Premier Division Scholes. They are bottom of the table after four defeats, out of the Heavy Woollen Cup and Jack Hampshire Trophy, while their overseas man Shatrunjay Gaeckwad returned home after their first game.
Scholes have received some good news as Mark Hydes is back after an 18-month injury lay-off and will play in the second team game at Moorlands tomorrow. If he comes through he could be in line to play in the first team against Mirfield Parish Cavaliers the following week.
Scholes welcome Methley to New Popplewell Lane tomorrow, while Liversedge will look to build on an encouraging start to their campaign at Ossett.
