Thomas strikes gold – Sarah sets GB record
ATHLETE Thomas Atkinson triumphed in Malta last Saturday winning gold and silver medals in his first international representative races.
He was competing for the North of England Under-20 team against national teams from Malta, Italy, Egypt, France, Luxembourg, Tunisia and Cyprus.
Thomas won silver in the 800m event, where he raced against the Maltese national record holder who is 10 years his senior.
In a hard-fought race, Thomas was only beaten in the final 100m, after leading all the way.
His gold came in the 4x100m relay after he was called up to run when two sprinters dropped out after injuries.
Thomas ran a blistering third leg to give the team an unassailable lead, with the last leg runner cruising over the line.
Whitcliffe Mount School pupil Thomas is also preparing to take his GCSEs, so the pressure will get more intense as his athletic pedegree is tested with Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and Northern Championships in the near future.
Thomas has a team who support his ambitions including Paul Dyson of Printees, at Carlinghow Mills, Batley, who has suppied race and training clothing and equipment, coach Dave Fryer, sports masseur Darren Hague, PE teacher Richard Hirst and dad Chris.
n Sarah Holt broke the British Under-23 hammer record last Saturday at the Loughborough Open meeting.
The former member of Spenborough AC threw 63.75 metres to win the event and beat the previous best of 63.35m set by Shirley Webb in 2003. It was her first event of the year.
Sarah, who was born in Dewsbury, took part in the world junior championships in Beijing in two years ago. She now competes for Sale Harriers in Manchester and is studying geography and sports science at Loughborough University.
