The dinner is organised by the Rotary Club of Batley which is raising money for two local charities.

In conjunction with the Rotary Club of Birstall Luddites, they want to raise £10,000 for Myrtles Garden - a sensory garden for the Society for the Blind of Dewsbury, Batley and District.

And in addition, they want to support Batley Salvation Army's £40,000 appeal for work on their roof and kitchen and an improved audio-visual system.

The Sporting Dinner, on Friday May 23, is their key fund-raising event for the year - places are available on either an individual basis or by tables of 10/12 at a cost of £30 per person, including a three course meal.

The evening's entertainment, suitable for a mixed audience, is provided by former football refereeTrelford Mills and ex-rugby player/turned comedian Lea Roberts.

Trelford refereed many high profile games and crossed swords with numerous, now legendary players including George Best, Paul Gascoigne, Glen Hoddle, Kevin Keegan, Rodney Marsh and Frank Worthington.

Lea was a professional with Halifax before becoming a stand-up comedian. In 2002 he scooped the title "Stand Up Britain" on the live final screened by ITV1.
