Birstall charity gig raises a grand

A Birstall pub raised more than £1,000 for the Oliver Field Appeal with a charity gig.

Local bands including the Mavis Seed (pictured) performed for free on Saturday night at the Black Bull Inn in Kirkgate to raise money for Oliver, two, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare cancer, aged eight months old. His family hope to raise £250,000 in case he needs overseas treatment. The pub also organised a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses and served food in return for donations. Landlady Mel Chrzanowski said she had a full house for the event.

“It was a brilliant night. I want to thank Steven at Beermaster for donating the beer, Mary for all her hard work with the raffle and Lorna for her collection at IKEA.”

Matt Burnside, of the Mavis Seed, said: “The evening was a complete success with everyone involved having a great night but more importantly between the pub, the organisers, the bands and the whole community we managed to raise over £1000 for the charity.

“This is a massive help towards Oliver’s treatment but still more can be done.”
