ROCK ON: The young people from Methodist churches who performed the rock opera Songs of Christmas

BACK in 1980 Britain was, like now, in the grip of a recession.

However traders were still hoping for bumper last minute takings in the run-up to Christmas.

David Lingard, store manager at Cleckheaton’s Hillards told the Guardian that the last few days before the holidays had been hectic and there appeared to be “as much money around as ever”.

Ronnie Duthie, chief executive officer of the Heckmondwike Co-operative Society said there had been a slow start to the festive spree but things were picking up and they expected the tills to be ringing, particularly in the food department.

Elsewhere in the Spen Valley a group of young Methodists was singing out the Christmas message in a different way.

The 18 young people, from Heckmondwike, Mirfield, Thornhill and Wakefield, performed the rock opera Songs of Christmas.

Written by Mike Butterworth, it told the story of Christmas in song, just before and after the birth of Jesus.

In Littletown, pupils at the village junior school entertained their fellow pupils, staff and parents with their performance of the pantomime Cinderella, and the children of the Liversedge parish church playgroup enjoyed tucking into festive food and playing party games at their Christmas party.
