STATE OF THE ART: Ackroyds showrooms in Cleckheaton.

STATE OF THE ART: Ackroyds showrooms in Cleckheaton.

NO self-respecting office in 2012 would be without computers, laser printers, calculators, wireless connections and Smart phones.

But 50 years ago, ‘state of the art’ meant typewriters, adding machines and filing cabinets, as this advertisement from the Spenborough Guardian shows.

Our archives from January 1962 include this wonderful ad, promoting the new Ackroyds showrooms in Albion Street, Cleckheaton.

It shows office desks and a ‘modern’ chair on castors, huge clunky Olympia typewriters, cumbersome adding machines and a B Speed-O-Print photocopier.

The business was set up with next to nothing by ex Japanese prisoner of war Ernest Ackroyd, and enjoyed a rapid expansion. From its original home in Bradford, it grew so quickly that larger premises in Cleckheaton were needed.

In 1956 Mr Ackroyd opened his first business in the town – in Westgate – and six years later moved to a brand new shop with a showroom in the entrance to the Market Arcade in Albion Street.

I was fascinated to read this article as I have just acquired a 1930s Smith (Corona) portable typewriter and I can't find anyone who services them. I tried Ackroyd's in Chapel Street, Bradford, but thetelephone number is unobtainable. Does anyone know someone who can service old typewriters?
