Carrying Olympic torch for Spen

Olympic torch

Olympic torch

SARAH Hall, in her recent column in the Spenborough Guardian, asked if we were all excited that the 2012 London Olympics are less than 500 days away.

I am looking forward to the Olympics for two reasons.

The Olympic Torch will be making its way around this country next year.

I am lobbying for it to come to the Spen Valley to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Luddite rising and the storming of Rawfolds Mill in Liversedge.

Secondly Natasha Perdue, one of this country’s top weightlifters, is training for the Olympics at Leeds Carnegie.

When she’s not ‘pumping iron’ she works alongside me in local government, and has done for the past 18 months.

I would love her to win a medal.

However I will have to watch her on television — £145 per ticket is a bit steep for me.
