Saving public sector jobs
SINCE the coalition government took office in 2010, around 270,000 public sector workers have lost their jobs, with more to come,
We were told that this was necessary in order to bring employment to the private sector, but the reality is different with companies such as Blockbusters, Comet, Clinton Cards, HMV, Jessops and JJB Sports, to name but a few, going into administration, causing thousands of job losses.
The high street is being decimated, and yet the recent horse burger scandal should act as a wake-up call for shoppers to support their local traders.
Last week I listened to the Stephen Nolan show on BBC Radio Five. ghe asked listeners how they were coping with the cold weather, and was surprised to be inundated with hundreds of people, employed and unemployed, calling in to his show saying how they are struggling with the choice of heating or eating.
Here in Kirklees we have a council, councillors and highly paid officers implementing the savage government policies, in that benefit claimants will have the amount of support they get for council tax, cut by almost a third.
Maybe these councillors and nameless officers should try living on £71 perweek dole money. I also note in last week’s paper that street lights will be switched off in the early hours of the morning by Kirklees Council saving around £20,000 in energy costs and £10,000 in maintenance costs each year.
A total of £30,000, which is more than enough to cover the £25,000 that Kirkjlees has paid for iPads for all its councillors
