What about local corner shops?

RE: ‘Tough times for Tesco’, Reporter Series, January 19/20.

I do find it odd that the people who take the time to start comparing prices don’t actually walk into their local convenience stores and compare the prices in there.

I can go into a local shop and buy produce cheaper than I can do by riding to Tesco, Asda, Morrisons or Sainsbury’s.

I purchase most of my stuff at Chidswell Service Station. I can buy bread for the same price as Tesco, I can buy milk cheaper, on some occasions, than Tesco, and I can buy eggs for £1, free range.

But the only people who seem to get a mention in the paper, whether it’s good news or bad news, is Tesco etc.

Indeed, I go and buy my fresh fruit and veg on a market stall at dinnertime. I pay on average £4 less than I would in a supermarket, and get more, and the food is so much tastier. Supermarkets and express supermarkets have successfully managed to prey on people's laziness to the point where people don't actually believe you can buy fruit, veg, meat, cheese etc anywhere else. as an example I get 6 Large 'pink-lady' variety apples from my market stall for £1.33. In Asda, 4 medium sized ones are £2.36. Make your own mind up. Its a no-brainer. Another benefit is that prices go up and down, depending on whether something is in season. And the owners are friendly, and occasionally give you stuff for free if it's there is only one of anything left, etc. WAKE UP PEOPLE, get to your markets, SAVE MONEY.
