THIS free weekly service for our readers details what is happening in and around the Spen Valley in the coming weeks. May 9-10
• Dewsbury Arts Group presents Proof at Dewsbury little Theatre, Upper Road, Batley Carr. Mystery and surprise with old-fashioned story telling. 01924 465647.
• Spen Amateurs present Dad's Army based on the hugely popula
r TV series at Cleckheaton town hall, evening performances from 7.15pm. Tickets from Eileen Feltwell on 01274 877828 or society members.

Saturday May 10
• Top tribute band to the Beatles, The Blue Meanies, play at Scholes Cricket Club. Tickets £12, available now from the club, costing £12.
• Charity auction and raffle at the Sir Robert Peel pub, High Street, Heckmondwike, from 7.30pm. Signed Huddersfield town shirts and football, tv/dvd, microwave, meals etc. In aid of the Laila Brown appeal to provide treatment therapy for the four-year-old who has cerebral palsy.
• Pond dipping at Oakwell Hall Country Park, Nutter Lane, Birstall, from 10am-noon for under 12s. Booking essential. Call 01924 326540.
• May fair at the United Reformed Church, Grove, Oxford Rd, Gomersal, from 10.30am-1.30pm, various stalls including cakes, plants, Fair Trade, green stall, bric a brac, tombola, games and Pentecost activities. Refreshments available.
• Birkenshaw Scouts and Guides Spring fair, from 2pm-4pm at the Scout HQ next to St Paul's Church, Birkenshaw. Displays from Spen Valley Scout and Guide Band and the Victoria School of Dance as well as all the fun of the fair with cream teas, bouncy castle, plate smash, tombola and lots more.
• Spring coffee morning at East Bierley Methodists from 10am-noon. Admission £1 including tea, coffee and biscuits. Bring and buy, fancy goods stall and cake stall.

Sunday May 11
• Party in the Park - from 2.30pm-4.30pm. A fun event for the community with jugglers, bouncy castles, face painting, crafts in Heckmondwike Green Park run by Churches Together in Heckmondwike & District. In case of bad weather, events will be in the Salvation Army premises, Barrack Street.
• Ride the Rails at Royds Park, Cleckheaton. Miniature steam railway, behind real steam locomotives, from 1.30pm-4.30pm. Rides 50p. Free parking. Refreshments available. Visit www.spenborough.me.uk for more details.
• Sponsored walk, jog or cycle on the Spen Valley Greenway at 12.30pm. It's a four and a half mile round trip and you can start from what was the railway station in Station Lane, Heckmondwike; Headlands Road, Liversedge, or from the Tesco car park in Cleckheaton. The event is sponsored by ROHM HAAS of Heckmondwike who will provide to each entrant a t-shirt. Sponsor forms available from hospice shops in Heckmondwike and Cleckheaton or call Bob Stocks on 01924 406748 entrance fee £5 for adults and £2 for under 16s.
• Jane Eyre - the well-dressed governess. Period costume presentation at Red House Museum from 2pm. Gillian Stapleton uses original and replica costume to follow Jane's story from charity schoolgirl to governess to fairytale bride. Admission £4, booking essential, call 01274 335100.
• To Clifton & Back - meet Cynthia from North Kirklees Ramblers at 1pm at Hartshead Church for a 4.5 mile moderate walk. Non members welcome.

Tuesday May 13
• Tea dance at Cleckheaton town hall from 2pm-4pm. Admission £1.30 including tea and biscuits.
• Jazz and swing music of the 40s and 50s with Kate Peters (Ella) and Reg Hargreaves Quartet, at Batley Carr social club, Mill Road. £2 admission, from 8.30pm.

Wednesday May 14
• Helen's Heritage Walk from Red House car park, Oxford Road, Gomersal, at 10.30am, visiting places associated with Mary Taylor, friend of Charlotte Bronte and early feminist. Costs £5. Booking essential - call Helen on 01274 831235.
• Evening Stroll around Mirfield with North Kirklees Ramblers - meet at 6.30pm at Mirfield Station, Back Station Road, for a five mile moderate walk. Non members welcome.
• Open meeting for Kirkwood Hospice's Cleckheaton support group at the Nook Chapel, Chapel Street, Cleckheaton, at 2pm.

Thursday May 15
• Manchester Camerata - Beethoven's 7th at Dewsbury Town Hall, from 7.30pm. Tickets £6-£16 (concessions available). Call 01484 223200 or 01924 324501.

May 16-18
• Art Exhibition at the Lower Wyke Moravian Church, Lower Wyke Lane. Friday, preview evening from 7pm-10pm, adults £1.50 including a glass of wine; Saturday, 10am-4pm, admission £1 including coffee and biscuits, (lunches also available); Sunday, noon-4pm, adults £1 including coffee.

Saturday May 17
• Tea at 5pm and concert with the Salvation Army Band and songsters at 6.30pm, at the Low Moor Wesleyan Reform Chapel, Union Road, Low Moor. Tickets for the tea and concert are; adults £5, children, £2.50, tea or concert only, adults £3, children £2. To reserve tickets ring 01274 680944.
• Watercolour workshop with artist Richard Gawthorpe at Oakwell Hall Country Park from 10am-2pm. Advanced class - subject matter, stones and rocks. £22, booking essential - call 01924 326240.
• Churches Together in Dewsbury Christian Aid Mini-market. Morning coffee, light lunches, afternoon tea and stalls, Longcauseway Church, Dewsbury, 9.45-3.30pm.
