READING that 1962-63 was one of the coldest winters, I was then working at the gasworks in Cleckheaton.
At that time Moorend Gasworks was classed as out of date. Everything was done by hand.

They had designed and built modern gasworks in Bradford and Dewsbury which were supposed to be fully automated.

They malfunctioned that winter.

Dewsbury shut down after a couple of years and Bradford resorted to manpower for the winter.

Did this weather affect Cleckheaton? Not on your life. We kept going to push gas afar afield as Skipton!

It was closed down in 1965 to make way for natural gas. A "boom" and we were never to go short of gas and it would be cheap.

What went wrong?
