Hammer blow for athletes

IT is just typical of Kirklees Culture and Leisure to grab a bit of free advertising, with Adam Wolstenholme promoting their Nordic walking scheme (Guardian and Herald April 25).
If one looks at the photograph in this edition, one will see the net around the hammer cage needs repairing – a repair that costs nothing, only time.

It has been like that for three months.

Excuse one: "We are waiting for a part."

Excuse two, six weeks later: "We are waiting for a cherry picker (a mobile platform to the uninformed)."

All this claptrap was told to a terrific hammer thrower, a schoolboy champion now a senior who also excels at discus and shot and who is now studying sports science and promotion at university, but in the summer break has nowhere to train.

At present he is throwing 54 metres and the 2012 games are just around the corner. No doubt Kirklees Culture and Leisure would be tripping over themselves and jumping on the publicity train should he make good.

Come on Kirklees, support established athletes before trying to kick-start new ones.
