WE fully support all the good work that Scouting has brought to the lives of young people for generations, and we were therefore saddened to read that someone had stooped to such depths to make a personal attack under the guise of defending the Scout Association (Scouts not political – Your Say, May 2).
Their attack has done much more to damage the movement than either of the letters to which they allude. Their attack was based on less than one per cent of the statement content which merely made reference to experience within the movement. The autho
r was particularly insincere as they have hidden their identity behind a veil of anonymity.
Had there been any basis of truth in their attack, they would not have stopped short at reference to the Scout movement, but also have added that the statements should not have made any reference to youth work, the Church, the police, the health service, young people in general, the elderly, road users and all the electorate alike.
None of the aforementioned services, associations or establishments have any political allegiances, and since only a minority of the electorate actually vote, the same applies to the electorate per se.
Having been involved in services for young people for around 60 years between us, through youth work and Sunday school as well as Scouting, we find the vindictive tone of the letter particularly concerning as it purports to come from an active Scouter.
We await to read a signed apology through the auspices of your paper.
