Air of mystery as scarecrow event looms

READERS are bracing themselves for an influx of weird characters this Sunday in Hunsworth and East Bierley as a shroud of secrecy descends upon the villages.

Preparations for the annual scarecrow week are well underway, with entrants keeping a tight lid on their creations before they are put on public display.

The event is one of the highlights in the village's year and draws hundreds of onlookers to the quirky contest.

Despite the information blackout, Friends of Hunsworth committee member Neil Fuller is expecting some weird and wonderful entries.

"The scarecrows are kept under wraps until they're due to be put on display and no one really tells anyone what they plan on doing. It gets a bit competitive but in the best possible way," he said.

However, rumoured sightings of a mermaid and children's TV favourite Noddy could prove true, when the scarecrows are unveiled next week.

Last year's winner was the Hunsworth Playgroup, which created a Wheels on the Bus design that impressed the judges.

Playgroup manager Janice Barlow revealed that the children, aged two to four, picked a traditional design in their bid to retain the crown.

"The children decided to do Worzel Gummidge and Aunt Sally this year. Ever since we told them the story they can't get enough of it and want to hear it again and again. They're very excited," she said.

"They love the competition and can't wait to see everyone's scarecrows around the village.

"They've been a great help and have made cakes, which they've painted, for the display and they've helped dress Worzel and Aunt Sally. They've even helped putting the head on the scarecrow!"

Hunsworth isn't alone in its scarecrow invasion, as the East Bierley Preservation Society is getting in on the act too.

Organiser Peter Mortimer said: "We're getting lots of interest in the competition. We've got a Laurel and Hardy design and I think that the school is getting involved too. It will be a great event."

* The scarecrow week runs from this Sunday. The winner will be announced on Hunsworth Village green on June 14 at 2pm and at East Bierley at 4pm.
