Follie good show

BROADWAY musical Follies is coming to North Kirklees next month.

The show’s New York revival last year was nominated for eight Tony Awards, and members of the Carlinghow Theatre Company are hoping for similar success when they bring it to Batley Town Hall.

The show is the directorial debut for the company’s president Nigel Dixon, who has spent 30 years on stage.

Describing the show as a ‘pastiche of styles’, Nigel said: “With a large cast, sumptuous costumes, energetic choreography and a full orchestra, I do hope people will take the opportunity to come and see this wonderful, rarely staged production.”

Set in 1971, Follies tells the story of a group of former showgirls, who gather with their partners for a final reunion party at the Weissman Theatre in New York, which is soon to be torn down.

While joyfully performing some of their old Follies numbers, their lives back in 1941 are revealed in flashback, and a tangled love affair soon emerges. The couples are forced to question their relationships, and must finally decide if they chose the right partner.

Follies is on from September 12 to 15, with performances starting at 7.15pm.

Tickets are £12 (£10 concessions) available online at www.kirklees.gov.uk/townhalls/boxoffice or by calling 01924 324501. Advanced bookings can also be made on 07774 128533.
