Review: Phantom of the Opera, Leeds Grand Theatre
Phantom of the Opera at Leeds Grand Theatre for the 25th anniversary tour
Classic, clever and contagious. You’ll want to see Phantom again and again. Review by Rebecca Draper.
The Phantom of the Opera is here, and he’s one phantom you don’t want to miss while he’s in town.
In celebration of the West End show’s 25th year, it is going on tour. And it landed this month at Leeds Grand Theatre, where it remains until September.
It’s no wonder tickets were snapped up within hours of them going on sale. The show is legendary, and at Leeds, it doesn’t disappoint.
Goosebumps are all but guaranteed with every crescendo from the orchestra, and every note sung by the performers is pitch perfect.
The Phantom is brilliantly played by John Owen-Jones, and his leading lady, Katie Hall, puts on a stunning display as Christine.
Understandably, the set has been significantly down sized from that in London, but a clever one-size fits all construction does the job marvellously, with secret compartments revealing clever ways around the smaller stage.
Lord Lloyd Webber’s Phantom is one show you’ll want to see again as soon as the curtain falls.
Phantom is on until September 15.
