A SPEN watering hole has been named Pub of the Season by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).
The Hartshead Social Club, in Prospect Road, which has been managed by George Roy and his wife Jackie for the last two years, was awarded the prize last Wednesday.

The main criteria for selection are beer quality, service, welcome and atmosphere and the award has also earned the pub a place in the Good Beer Guide.

George said: "It's very nice to be recognised as a pub that serves good quality ale in a pleasant atmosphere. It's also a credit to the bar staff, who work extremely hard."

The pub supports local breweries and stocks Jennings Cumberland Ale and beer from micro breweries.

George added: "I think it's imporant to support local brewers. Often the best beer comes from the smaller breweries and we are proud to stock their produce."

The Hartshead is open Monday to Friday 7.30pm-11.30pm and Saturday to Sunday noon-12am. Phone 01274 873365.
