A UNIQUE and spectacular extravaganza of the Kirklees Youth Games will feature around 2,500 children from across the district and as far afield as China.
The event on Sunday is expected to attract over 7,500 people to the Galpharm Stadium from 1pm.

Bone marrow campaigner and local journalist Adrian Sudbury will officially open the event with Olympic diver Tandi Smith.

After an 18-month battle
against acute myeloid leukaemia, 26-year-old Adrian has touched millions of people with his campaign to get more bone marrow donors, gaining pledges of support from Gordon Brown.

VIPs at the event will include boxer Prince Rodney, Olympic medal winner Derek Ibbotson, and former Huddersfield Town footballer and 1966 England World Cup winner Ray Wilson.

The Games will act as a curtain raiser for the rugby league match between Huddersfield Giants and Bradford Bulls.

The specially composed fanfare Seize the Day, which has been written and recorded with the voices of over 250 Kirklees children, will be performed at 1.30pm and during half time of the rugby match.

There will be an Olympic-style opening ceremony, dance and cheerleading, sports demonstration, competition, a firework show, and the finale welcoming the two rugby teams will be a "Yorkshire haka" performed by hundreds of children.

The Youth Games are also to play host to many international visitors, from each of our three twin towns in France, Germany and Poland.

Teams of eight from each country will be challenged to match or better Derek Ibbotson's world-record time of 3min 57.2secs for a mile long run.

A visiting team of athletes from China will be joining in the fun as well, demonstrating their art on the Galpharm pitch.

Kirklees Council's Cabinet member for Children's Services, Jim Dodds, said: "The initiative doesn't end on July 6 but continues for the next four years on the theme of Getting Kirklees Fit For 2012 - the year of the London Olympics.

"In two years over 20,00 young sportspeople have taken part in the activities all over Kirklees.

"The council is determined to ensure that children's health and wellbeing continue to improve by providing more and more sporting opportunities.

"The atmosphere on Sunday will be terrific. I hope that people give it their support and make it a memorable occasion."

The Games have also recognised the role of media in sport by including a competition encouraging children to get into journalism which offered the chance to shadow professional sports reporters at the event.

The winners of the competition were George Gavaghan and Marcus Scott, who will shadow reporters including Richard Pickering of the Dewsbury Reporter.

Tickets for the match and celebration are £18.50 adults, £12.50 concessions, £7 school children and infants go free.

There is a £2 discount for anyone booking in advance.
