A COMMUNITY is still reeling from the death of a Gomersal pensioner who was robbed in broad daylight just yards from her home.

This week a man – also from Gomersal – appeared in court accused of her manslaughter.

Jean Myers, an 89-year-old grandmother, had her handbag containing just £15.94 stolen on Friday.

She died from head injuries suffered during the mugging.

Paul Halstead, 26, of Shirley Parade, appeared before Dewsbury and Batley Magistrates on Tuesday. He is accused of the manslaughter of Mrs Myers, her robbery and a second robbery last Friday .

He spoke only to confirm his name, age and address. He was refused bail by bench chairman Eddie Brady.

Halstead will remain in custody until he appears before Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday.
