IT’s the end of an era for a Cleckheaton stalwart who is leaving her job as a medication dispenser after 50 years.

Winifred Howard will leave Lloyds Pharmacy, in Greenside, after half a century providing medication to folk across the Spen Valley. She started as a 15-year-old after leaving St John Fisher’s School, in Dewsbury.

When she began her career, she worked for Greenwoods, in Northgate, which remained an independent pharmacy until a few years ago.

Mrs Howard, 65, works with her daughter, Kate, who is also training to be a dispenser at the same shop.

Mrs Howard said: “The job has changed over the years, there’s far more ready-packed bottles now so we don’t have to fill them with pills anymore. Back then, we would make our own cough or stomach mixtures.

“I’m going to miss the customers who come in but you have to look forward and not backwards. I’ve had a great time.”
