THIEVES have silenced the bells over Norristhorpe after stealing from a village church.
The historic bell, which hung in the tower above All Souls Church, disappeared some time last week, much to the dismay of parishioners.
Church warden Derek Newsome said he and his wife were walking past the church on Sunday when they noticed something was wrong.
“My wife looked up and said there was something not right but she wasn’t sure what,” he said.
“Then I looked and saw the bell had gone. At first we thought someone had broken in, but there’s no sign of any damage so they must have scaled the roof to steal it.”
The bell is believed to have been made from phosphor bronze or brass and had been hung in the church since it was built in 1883.
“It was usually rung once a week, on a Sunday, and also at funerals,” said Derek.
“It’s such an important feature of the village and everyone will miss it. It’s just disgusting that someone could steal from a church.”
