Mention the word ‘burlesque’ and images of Parisian cafes and continental bars would probably spring to mind.
But one Heckmondwike cabaret singer has made it her mission to bring a bit of spice to Spen!
April Lindsay, 31, who grew up in Cleckheaton, is putting on a series of cabaret shows which feature both singing and burlesque performances at the Moorland Club in Bradford Road, and wants to put a smile on the faces of people from her hometown.
Burlesque is described as tasteful, sometimes satirical or mocking acts which can feature part-striptease, and April believes that the folk of Cleckheaton will take to it.
She said: “I have been singing for nearly 20 years, but I have only recently got into putting on burlesque events, and the reaction has been really positive where we’ve been.
“Burlesque has always been popular, but it has been making a bit of a comeback recently – a lot of the acts can be very artistic and satirical, and quite a lot of the people who come to see our shows are couples.”
The shows, which are organised by April’s agency, Platinum and Pink, are cabaret evenings, and include singing turns from April, who will perform a series of vintage hits.
She said: “I have a group of girls I work with, and the shows have already been quite well-received – I perform singing and help put on acts around the country, but it will be great to come back and perform in Cleckheaton!”
The first event will be held at the Moorland Club in Bradford Road on Saturday April 13, with many more planned throughout the year.
