Army sergeant’s tragic death

AN army sergeant who was born and brought up in Spen has been killed in a motorbike accident near York.

Christopher (Chris) Foxhall Ryder died on Monday following the accident in Elvington.

Sgt Ryder, 41, was brought up in Hightown, where his parents Les and Diane still live, and attended Hightown and Whitcliffe Mount schools.

He joined the army shortly after leaving school and had been in the Yorkshire Regiment (formerly Prince of Wales) for 24 years, serving in Canada, Bosnia, Africa and Northern Ireland.

His father said the family was devastated by his death but had received great comfort from the hundreds of messages of condolence they had received.

The funeral is on Thursday April 21 at St Oswald’s Church, Fulford Road, York, at 2.15pm where he will receive full military honours and a 21-gun salute. It will be followed by a family-only cremation. The family has requested no flowers but there will be a collection for an army charity.

Sgt Ryder lived near Selby, with his partner, Gail, and had two children, Emma and Robbie. He also leaves a brother, Stephen.
