Fresh from having success on the pitch, a Cleckheaton sports club has now been presented an award for its efforts off it!
The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has named Cleckheaton Sports Club as the regional cask ale club of the year for 2013.
Mark Waite, the club’s treasurer, said: “We are obviously delighted to have won this. We have only been serving cask ales for just over a year, so we were very surprised to have got the phonecall from CAMRA!”
Mark said that, after striking a deal with the Thwaites brewery to stock their cask ales, he had a few reservations.
He said: “With cask ales, once the cask has been tapped, you only have a few days to use it before it goes off, and I didn’t know if we would shift in time.
“But it was better than I could have imagined – we were selling them so quickly!
“The award is a great accolade for the club and it’s great that CAMRA has recognised our hard work in delivering ales of the finest quality.”
Cleckheaton RUFC, who are based at the club, went on a 10-match winning run in the North 1 East league this season before being pipped for promotion by local rivals Morley.
Mark Waite added: “It’s been a good few months for the club, as the rugby team went on their good run, we have had more people coming in .
“We’ve got a long history here, and the club has recently been refusbished, so there is a really good atmosphere here at the moment.”
The club was opened in 1864 when Hunsworth Mills Cricket Club was formed.
