THE Bishop of Wakefield will formally open Whitechapel Primary School in September, as work gathers pace on the £3.5m project.

The Rt Rev Stephen Platten visited the site, which is undergoing a £3.5m redevelopment as part of Spen’s school reorganisation, last week.

Pupils are currently split between the former Moorend and St Luke’s first school buildings.

The Bishop first visited church wardens at St Luke’s, St John’s and Whitechapel churches before meeting headteacher Michelle Boubabida to see the development first hand.

He said: “Standing alongside this ancient church and boarded by the M62 motorway, with splendid acres of grounds, Whitechapel Church of England Primary School is marvellously placed to educate our children for the 21st century within a Christian context.”

Pupils will move into the school in September and contractors Morgan Sindall said the work will be completed in time for the start of the next academic year.
