SWIMMERS can enjoy a post-exercise cup of tea at Spen Pool again as the cafe has reopened.

It is now privately owned and has been renamed The Retreat by new managers, mum and daughter team Diane Phillips and Vicky Unila.

The cafe, which opened the same time as the pool under the old Spenborough Council, closed last July.

Kirklees Active Leisure said it had been losing money for years.

Customers reacted angrily at the news, saying it was a ‘real shame’ that the cafe was to close.

But Vicky, who formerly worked in the cafe at Oakwell hall, decided she wanted to open up the Spen Baths cafe again and made enquiries with Kirklees Council.

Her mum Diane said: “We have been steady but not many people realise we are open to the public. We want people from outside to come in as well.

“We have changed the menu and we are trying to offer more healthy options as well. We’ve decorated and installed new equipment too.”

Diane said she and Vicky were encouraging gym users to come into the cafe and would be selling bodybuilding products for the weightlifters.

She added: “My husband is involved with natural bodybuilding and we have contacted quite a few world champions. We are planning a big open day and hopefully they will come along.”
