A SPEN football coach has been nominated to become one of the Olympic torch bearers before next summer’s games.
Claire Roe, 36, of Hunsworth, was shocked to find out that she was in line for the top honour, alongside eight other people from the Bradford district to be nominated.
Claire has been a coach at Cleckheaton and Gomersal FC for six years, taking on the under-eights team and guiding them through the leagues. She has kept the same lads and will now compete in the under-13s league this season.
She was nominated by one of the parents, but only found out about it last week.
“I would love to be chosen to carry the torch. I don’t find out until December, so it’s a bit of a wait,” Claire said.
If chosen, she will run with the iconic torch when it crosses the country in the run up to the 2012 games. Claire hopes that her six years as a volunteer coach will stand her in good stead when the Olympics bosses make their decision.
She added: “I was roped into coaching when someone left, but I found that I really enjoyed it so I carried on. What I do is completely voluntary and I love it. It’s almost like a fulltime job at times, because we put a lot of hours in to organise fixtures and deal with other teams.
“Two years ago, I arranged a trip to Holland for my under-10s team and the under-13s that took a huge amount of organisation and planning.”
