A vicar and his parishioners are scaling the roof of the British Isles to help raise money for their church roof appeal.

All Saints in Roberttown has to find more than £100,000 to replace the roof, and so the Rev Richard Burge and some of the congregation are heading out on a sponsored climb up Ben Nevis.

“It will certainly be a challenge,” said Richard. “I did the Coast to Coast walk in 1996, but that seems a long time ago now. The amount we have to raise to replace the roof has set us quite a mountain to climb, so what better way to raise some of the money!”

The expedition will take place in the summer of this year and team leader Shawn Peel of Butterfield’s Funeral Directors in Cleckheaton is positive that the summit is well within reach of the sponsored climbers. I did a trial run last year and am sure we will all manage to make it to the top and back, and hopefully we will raise a good sum towards the figure needed for the church roof,” he said.

Anyone wwanting to sponsor the climbers can contact contact Richard on 01274 873024, or email There are also a sponsor forms in the church, the church charity shop, Faith, Hope and Charity in Roberttown Lane, and in several of the other Roberttown village shops.
