Nightingales and knitted liquorice sweets were among some of the handcrafted baubles on show at a community Christmas Tree Festival.

More visitors than ever before packed into Trinity Methodist Church in Mirfield last weekend for the annual event, which featured themed trees decorated with homemade creations.

Thirty-one trees were entered into the best-dressed competition, with designs from schoolchildren, community groups and businesses.

The first prize, donated by Mirfield Town Council, went to Musica Mirfield and Friday Nightingales, who decorated their tree with miniature Nightingale birds and music.

In second place was the Happy Memories Dementia Support Group, who dressed their Christmas tree with delicately folded newspaper.

And Trinity Craft Bee, who had been busy knitting Liquorice Allsorts and a Bertie Bassett tree topper took third place.

Pauline Fallon, a member of the church, who has helped to organise the event, said: “We had more visitors than ever before and there was a real buzz around all weekend.

“We raised just over £800 for The Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice and nearly £300 for Touchstone Bradford.

“I would just like to thank everyone who dressed a tree, helped in any way to organise and set up the festival and to those who attended to see the wonderful displays and give so generously to the charities.”
