ANTI-SOCIAL yobs who cause havoc in Birkenshaw are being warned that spy cameras will be watching their every move.

CCTV has been installed at the village community hall and Scout headquarters following reports of drug dealing and troublemakers. The cameras will be continually monitored and police will crack down on those causing problems.

Coun Andrew Palfreeman said: “Ward councillors were approached after concerns by some users of the community hall who felt intimidated by youths hanging around secluded areas to the rear of the hall; by residents concerned about the activities of young people and alleged drug dealing, and the Scout group which feared for the safety of those using their headquarters from cars which sped along the road next to their building.”

A joint working party involving the police, community safety, Scouts, church and councillors was set up resulting in CCTV, initially funded through the local area committee, but with running costs met by St Paul’s Church and the Scout group.

Coun Palfreeman said: “The Scout headquarters and the community hall are a vital part of the village and anything we can do to make the users safe is important.”

Scout group chairman Tony Bannister said: “The new camera is very high-tech and will provide a high definition image of the people who race past the doors of the HQ in cars and on motorcycles, certainly good enough to capture number plates.

“We thought of CCTV, but were struggling to know how we were going to pay for it until the area committee came up with a fantastic offer to become involved.”
