PUPILS at Birkenshaw First School have become the first in the Spen Valley to own a cutting edge 3D printer.

The year four pupils won a ‘Dragon’s Den’ competition to come up with a product that could be sold around the school, after ‘pitching’ to organisers via video link.

The youngsters came up with Birkidz – a customisable ID tag worn on shoelaces, draw string bags and zip fasteners – that will be sold around school.

The competition was organised by Kirklees Education Authority and the printer was funded by Loughborough University.

Schools from around the valley will be able to use the printer as well as part of their computer studies.
