What started as a New Year Resolution for a Cleckheaton man has gained him champion status for Kirkwood Hospice.

David Lindsay, pictured above, chose a poetic resolution – to learn a poem or monologue every week by heart.

And he realised he could use his newly acquired talent to help raise money for Kirkwood Hospice.

David and his team organised Lend Us Your Ears – an evening of verse for the hospice’s capital appeal to raise £3m.

The event was sponsored by Swooshed, Tangerine Confectionery, Mrs Dacre the Baker and Arte Hairdressing, and performers included Black Water, Morley Folk and Alan and Carol Walker from the Yorkshire Dialect Society, along with local talent from the Croppers and Panthers Folk Clubs and Cleckheaton Poetry Group.

Video taken at the event can be seen at www.facebook.com/lendusyourears.

The evening was a huge success, raising £1,119.09, earning David the title of Hospice Champion.

Hospice capital appeal manager Marie Peacock said: “Everyone worked really hard and David deserves to be one of our first Hospice Champions. As such, an invite will be sent to our special preview evening of our in-patient unit next year.”

David said: “I have decided to run the event again next year and would love to hear from people who would like to help with organising or taking part”.
