MORE than 300 pupils, parents and teachers gathered at Spen Valley Sports College to celebrate the school’s best ever exam results.

Among those receiving awards was Olympic-hopeful swimmer and ex-pupil Matthew Johnson from Liversedge.

Sixteen-year-old Matthew was one of six who gained special recognition at the school’s annual awards evening for outstanding achievement.

And in return Matthew presented the school with a team GB strip in recognition of the support he had received.

Others to gain special awards included Harry Edwards, who gained 14A* grades in his GCSEs;, Ben Hurrell with 6A* and 6A grades;, Paris Goulding, who gained 2A* and 10 A grades; Natalie Davies with 2A* and 8A grades; and Avon Blyth, who gained 7A* and 8A grades.

Deputy headteacher Kay Brennan said: “We are very proud of these stunning young people. It is fantastic to see them doing so well. It is really moving that so many pupils return and thank us.”
