I am delighted to have been nominated to contest the Liversedge and Gomersal ward in the forthcoming election.
Over the years I have supported numerous residents with their concerns and problems, and I hope that residents feel I have worked for them, not the other way around.
Actively involved with local tenants and residents’ groups, I believe strongly in residents having their say on local issues.
I have been steadfast in my support for the retention of our green belt, not just at election time but since first elected in 1987.
Our children’s education is also very important to me, and I will continue to fight for fair funding for our local schools, and parental choice.
Since 1987 I have been part of the Dewsbury and District Society for the Blind Management Committee, and have served as their president for the last three years. Blindness I feel is one of the worst disabilities. I shall always support anyone with a disability for a better quality of life, and I will continue to do so along with my special interest in the welfare of our older people.
‘Put people before politics’ is what I believe, and I will continue to do so.
I moved to this area three years ago upon my retirement, having been committed to Green politics for many years.
If elected, I will join the Green councillors in promoting ideas which the Green Party have put forward, such as the free Warmzone scheme which helps to cut carbon emissions, creating jobs and saving residents money.
The Green Party have help the council save money without cutting services, and have opposed plans for massive housebuilding in the Local Development Framework.
I will be with other Green Party candidates in doing my utmost in protecting local services, particularly those for the most vulnerable in our community.
I want the council to give more encouragement to small businesses, and I will oppose the cuts, believing that they do not have to be so deep so soon.
In particular, I was pleased that our existing councillors voted against the cuts to social care for older and disabled people and to children’s services – the only party on the council to do so.
Local residents tell me that they want to see somebody standing up for them in the far-flung reaches of Huddersfield. It’s time that Liversedge and Gomersal had a proper voice. That is why I support the Lib Dem proposals to have decisions about our area made in the Spen Valley – as they were before Kirklees was invented.
I am campaigning for our green fields to be kept green. I will fight to make sure that our Children’s Centres stay open and provide much needed services to young families. I will work hard to ensure that Liversedge & Gomersal is heard. That we aren’t left behind, and that our roads are maintained, our streets clean, and our properties safe.
The increase of £5.30 a week in the state pension and cut in income tax paid are Lib Dem actions in Government which will help thousands of local people.
I will hold regular surgeries across the ward to make sure that I am listening to a range of voices in a very diverse area. I will be a councillor for all.
Importantly, I will fight tooth and nail for Liversedge and Gomersal, and always make sure that our beautiful area gets the best care possible from Kirklees.
I live in Liversedge in Hartshead I am married and have two daughters 17 and 12.
I have been a Labour Party member for many years and an active campaigner within the ward, last year I supported the campaign of Gordon North and previously that of Mike Wood MP.
I am able to listen and have contributed to those within the ward requiring a voice on the local development core strategy, particularly the impact of the Cooper Bridge development on the ward I seek to represent, this I have done whilst understanding the need for future employment requirements within Kirklees and challenging comrades close to me.
I believe that the Labour values of “fairness, equality and social justice need to be upheld, I value the welfare state and the safety net that it provides I see the NHS being ripped apart by a vicious right wing Tory-led Government.
Public services; Savage cuts to our fire services will cost lives savage cuts to our police force will result in an increase in Crime, I observe that from recent figures in the last 12 months theft from motor vehicles in the Liversedge and Gomersal ward has increased by 47 per cent.
