A COUPLE who let rubbish pile up in their garden have been slapped with a £150 fine each.

Marie Beaumont and Paul Whitford pleaded guilty at Batley and Dewsbury Magistrates Court for failing to clear garden waste

The court hear they were asked to clear their garden of rubbish in June 2011.

However they failed to do so and were then served with a litter clearance notice, giving them 28 days to comply.

The rubbish remained and they were each given a £100 fixed penalty notice.

However they did not pay the fine and so were taken to court.

At the hearing last week they were each fined £150 with £190 costs and £15 victim support.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “Residents are responsible for keeping their garden free from waste.

“Waste not only looks unsightly but can smell and attract vermin. If residents ignore council requests to keep their gardens clear of waste they will be prosecuted.”
