Both Huddersfield Town and Leeds United had impressive wins in the League Cup last night, as they hope to emulate the success of last season’s finalists Bradford City.

Winger Adam Hammill put Town into the third round of the Capital One Cup for the first time in 10 years as the home side twice recovered from behind to beat Charlton 3-2. Hammill slammed in the winner on 82 minutes after the ball fell kindly for him after James Vaughan jostled for Jon Stead’s through pass.

Meanwhile, Leeds United had two debutants to thank as midfielder Alex Mowatt shone and defender Scott Wootton scored the opening goal in a 3-1 defeat of Doncaster Rovers.

Billy Paynter equalised for the home side two minutes after going on as a substitute. But a powerful header from striker Matt Smith and a penalty from Ross McCormack sealed the tie in Brian McDermott’s side’s favour, stretching Leeds’s unbeaten run at the Keepmoat to five games. The third round draw will take place this evening after the Newcastle v Morecambe game.

Speaking of Ross McCormack, Leeds United are still locked in contract talks with the striker after rejecting three seven-figure bids from Middlesbrough for the highly-rated Scotland international.

Bradford City boss Phil Parkinson insists red-hot striker Nahki Wells is going nowhere, despite big-spending QPR being the latest name added to the list of interested clubs. The Bermudan international, who has hit six goals in the opening five games, is reportedly worth around £3m.

Sheffield United are reportedly leading the race for Coventry City’s Callum Wilson. The Sky Blues striker, 21, has scored five goals in five games already this season. Blades assistant Lee Carsley is the link to Wilson, after the former Everton midfielder’s spell on the coaching staff at Coventry.

The Daily Mirror have reported that Chelsea’s skilful defender David Luiz is a £30 million target for Manchester United.
