A Birkenshaw-based dog rescue has called for old dogs to get the “retirements” they deserve.
Kathy Hirst, from Yorkshire Rose Dog Rescue said: “We hear about people who get rid of their old dog to make way for a new one at Christmas, which is so sad.”
“A lot of people are also put off adopting older dogs. But many people like the idea of giving a dog a nice ‘retirement’ and a warm fire to sit by.”
Sam, pictured, is a 10-year-old Staffie, but Kathy said there is life in the old dog yet.
“He is a lovely dog,” she said. “He has a lot of energy – he loves his walks!”
