HEARTLESS thieves stole a cafe staff’s Christmas tip jar during a break in.

Staff at Ryan’s Cafe, in Cleckheaton’s Central Arcade, were shocked to discover that the tips they had been saving for months, had been stolen along with petty cash.

The cafe was broken into overnight on Sunday December 11, after thieves smashed in the back door.

The break in was only discovered the following morning at around 7.30am when the cafe’s new manager, Vanessa Overend, arrived at work.

She said the thefts were ‘upsetting’ for the staff who had worked hard throughout the year.

“It’s very disappointing for the staff who have worked all year and saved their tips for their Christmas bonus,” she said.

“When I came in and saw what had happened, the immediate feeling was ‘are they still inside?’

“Luckily, they had gone by the time I got here.”

Since the break in, the staff have beefed up security at the cafe.

Vanessa added: “We have improved security and we now have no cash left on the premises overnight.

“This has not harmed our Christmas spirit in the slightest. It’s just very disappointing for the staff.”

Police are analysing CCTV footage of the break in.
