Scholes could soon have its very own skatepark if local children have their way.

Cleckheaton councillors John Lawson and Kath Pinnock want to put together plans for improvements to Scholes rec as well as Mann Dam in Cleckheaton.

Councillors have been attending public meetings to decide the future of Scholes rec, with a skate park and a community garden just two of the suggestions from locals on how the area can be redeveloped.

Coun Lawson, who has long been an advocate of improvements to Scholes rec, said: “A group of people are starting to come together – residents are hoping to get the local churches and other groups involved to bring a community agreement on what to do.

“Someone has suggested a skate park but that is only one idea. We’ve also had ideas for a community garden.

“At the moment, we are trying to get a feel for what people in Scholes want. With any luck, we will hopefully be able to see something there within 18 months to three years if we manage to get plans together and approved.”

Coun Pinnock added that the plans for new signage at Mann Dam could be the start of a bright future for the area, which could even see the site become a nature reserve in future.

She said: “We are looking at the possibility of putting more signage into Mann Dam to let people know what the area is.

“We are hoping that one day Mann Dam could become a nature reserve – there is lots of wildlife and areas of scientific interest around the area, and we need to do more to promote that.

“I hope that the possibility of new signage could be the start of something bigger for the area.”

The issue of Scholes rec is likely to be mentioned at Tuesday’s Spen Valley Area Committee meeting, which will be held in Cleckheaton town hall at 7pm.
